“Your eyes cast a spell that bewitches.
The last time I needed twenty stitches
To sew up the gash
That you made with your lash,
As we danced to the masochism tango.”
  -Masochism Tango by Tom Lehrer.

I have been fortunate to see so many awesome shows lately.  They are mostly the brave, smaller, independent works which are driven by a passionate crew.  Fleur du Cap winners Godfrey Johnson and Christine Weir get together for the first time during their saucy little cabaret called Tainted Love which is appropriately shown at the cosy Beefcakes burger bar (and pink palace) in Green Point.

Walking into the glitzy kitsch Beefcakes  I can’t help but gawk at a group of hunky young men, dressed in pink feather boas and silver cowboy hats, tucking into man-sized burgers. The show venue is tiny but very intimate, with a small round dance floor, stage, and even a white carousel horse kind of right in the middle of where all the action takes place.  Christine Weir is dressed in a super tight little red sequenced number and her gorgeous long legs looks like they were created for the tango. The duo perform the Masochism Tango which is filled with tongue-firmly in cheek S&M lyrics and raunchy dance moves.

They sing, dance, play the piano and grind their hips through a range of songs such as Noel Coward’s Nina; Stephen Sondheim’s Hanky Panky and Dean Friedman’s Sado Masochism.   Have You Waxed your Crack is a hysterical little number that will make your eyes water.  The show is not for the censorious, sanctimonious or the puritanical theatre goer.  However, it is more burlesque fun rather than outright vulgar.  Weir’s torch song take on Katy Perry’s I Kissed a Girl is nothing short of brilliant.

Fiona du Plooy, who won this year’s Fleur du Cap Award for best performance in a cabaret for Angels on Horseback choreographs. This show is perfect for a night out with friends, or to spoil someone for their birthday by taking them for a burger and a bit of raunchy cabaret. Afterwards you can go and play at the clubs in GreenPoint.  For 80 bucks per ticket, you get a great night out safe in the professional arms of three theatre greats.
